When I first thought about becoming a journalist, I thought that journalists only produced print media. I soon realised, upon arrival at Rhodes University, that there are so many other paths that a journalist can follow.

 

Despite deviating from writing after second year, writing is still a medium of storytelling that I am very much interested in. Whether one goes into audio or photographic storytelling, writing plays an integral part in that, in my opinion. 

 

My previous experiences of writing within my journalistic career have been journalistic articles which follow a fairly rigid layout. What I enjoyed about this fourth year writing module is that it focused much more on creative writing.

 

I was able to choose a topic, tattooing, that I found highly interesting. Although I did know a fair amount about my topic, I still learned a lot through writing all of the pieces for this course.

It was great to experience this storytelling avenue of writing, as a change from the rigidity of my previous journalistic writing experiences.
